The root is made up of 15% kavalactones, which is the active compound of interest.

Its Use

Kava Kava was used by Melanesia and Polynesia in ceremonies and celebrations because of its calming effect and ability to promote sociability. The drink "kava" is still used in this region today, where the people are often referred to as the happiest and friendliest in the world.

The origin of kava usage is not known, as it predates written history in Oceanic.   The plant was probably originated in the New Guinea-Indonesia area and spread with other plants from island to island. Regardless of its origin, it has been used in ceremonies by the Oceanic people for thousands of years. Kava was prepared as a drink and given to the chief guests, then served to the next person of ranking order. This ceremony is still practiced today for visiting dignitaries.

Kava is a mild natural relaxant. It creates a pleasant sense of tranquillity and sociability. Kava is commonly used to get a good night's rest, or mellow the mood. Kava may be one of the hottest-selling supplements on the market today. It brings a sense of well-being, calms nervous anxiety, and helps to fight fatigue. It is also considered an important herb for pain relief. Kava is recommended as a muscle relaxant. Research found the herb to contain anticonvulsant and muscle relaxing properties. Kava is used as an analgesic sedative for rheumatism and insomnia. It has antiseptic properties to help with bladder infections and may be directly applied to wounds.

Primary uses include Insomnia and Nervousness. Secondary uses include Anxiety, Bronchitis, Pain, Urinary Infections, Asthma, Fatigue, Venereal Disease, Rheumatism, & Vaginitis.

Approximately 100 milliliters of Kava would put most people into a deep dream-less sleep within 30 minutes. Unlike alcohol and other sedatives, Kava does not produce hangovers. You wake having no after affects.
